TESS teams have now produced the three reports which constitute the outputs of Work Package 1. They describe the first phase of our research which we undertook in the calendar year 2014. In this phase, we created a database of community-based initiatives in our regions, we then selected initiatives for further analysis and we finally examined the regional and national operating contexts for our initiatives.

Deliverable 1.1 is entitled “Case study selection method and criteria, including a checklist to evaluate the community-based initiatives”. It explains the TESS approach to selecting community-based projects that would satisfy the requirements of our wide-ranging cross-disciplinary research project. WP2 requires a representative sample that is generalisable to the entire European context. On the other hand, WP3 requires case studies that are as illustrative as possible of their local context to allow in-depth analysis. WP4 seeks to integrate the results from WP2 and WP3. This report outlines the way in which these interdisciplinary challenges were negotiated in the context of the TESS project through the use of multiple criteria for inclusion in sub-samples:

Deliverable 1.2 is entitled “Inventory database of community-based initiatives and selected case studies”. It describes more fully the database of initiatives in the TESS project as well as our sub-samples: key initiatives for in-depth analysis and supportive initiatives for cross-Europe comparison. It also includes some preliminary analysis of the initiatives in the database:

Deliverable 1.3 is entitled “Intermediate characterisation of case study regions”. It constitutes an analysis of the context and drivers for community-based initiatives in each of our study regions, including geographical, demographic, social and economic factors. It also examines briefly the differences in national culture and policy support. This analysis will be pushed much further in WP4.
